Back from a fun time in southern New Jersey
The Island Long Riders hosted a new rider/new horse clinic at Walking Y Ranch in Pittsgrove New Jersey on Saturday, October 16. The weather was great as new riders turned out for both the morning and afternoon sessions.
Our wonderful hosts, Gil and Madlyn really made us feel welcome. A large ring was set up, giving us plenty of room to ride. An area was set up for the several spectators that showed up to see what mounted shooting is all about.
We should also mention the food - Gil and Madlyn must have worked their fingers off to provide such a spread. Breakfast, Lunch AND dinner were made available to all with something for every taste. I am sure no one went home hungry!
South Jersey is off to a great start. With a little work and participation, the area should have an up and running club by the spring. The people I met there certainly have the knowledge, skills and determination to put it all together.
The Island Long Riders look forward to being a part of the matches we hope to see down there in 2011.
Red Hat Photography was on site.
Pictures from the event can be viewed on their website at this link.

Island Long Riders make great showing at the SASS NE Regional Mounted Competition!
It was a tough week, but somehow we managed to get the trailer fixed and haul our horses to Maryland for the 2010 Mason-Dixon SASS NE Regional Competition. A great time was had by all and New York made a great showing!
Joe won Overall Champion for the mounted match.
Mary won the Women's Champion Buckle
Jimmy won Top Overall Cowboy, by besting everyone with mounted shooting PLUS ground shooting!
The East End Regulators had a fun BBQ on Saturday night. Great friends, great food and lot's o' moonshine.
This is a "must do" for 2011. Start getting your horses ready now!
I am in the process of getting some photos to the gallery on this website. Meanwhile, you can find them on my MobileMe Gallery or at the club's Facebook group.

NYS Championship match a success!
Congratulations to all our winners!
The weather decided to cooperate and make up for last weeks wetness. It was a beautiful day at Old Bethpage Village Restoration as 23 riders came from all over New England
to participate in the CMSA 2010 New York State Championship match.
As the smoke cleared the CT Renegades president, Roger Dinsmore, rode away with the Championship title. Enjoy your buckle Roger!
We also had three full classes. Jai Kaminoff (Men's 1), Lisa Buggie (Ladies 1) and Diane Schena (Ladies 2) all receive a custom buckle to commemorate their class wins!
Thanks to everyone for coming out. A big thanks to our balloon runners who ran their feet off. Thanks to everyone for helping out and making this event another great success.
Complete results are posted on the events page.
We also have a video of one of the runs that can be found in the gallery on our webstie and also on our Facebook group.
8/22 update:
NYS Match Rain Date Announced The NYS 8/22 match has been rescheduled for SATURDAY, August 28 at 11am. Same location - Old Bethpage Village Restoration. Sorry for the inconvenience. The weather didn't cooperate.
Please let us know if you can make the new 8/28 date.
Update: August 22, 2010 - 6:45am
UPDATE: The 8/22 match is CANCELLED due to weather. Even if we could slip things in between the showers, the grass field is too wet. Lot's of phone calls to make right now. We are in the process of looking for a rain date. Stay tuned for more information.
Update: August 17, 2010
At this point it is looking like full classes for Mens 1, Ladies 1 and Ladies 2. One more Ladies 3 and that will be a full class too! (This is based on who has signed up and/or told me they are coming - things can change).
This is a TRIPLE points CMSA State match with BUCKLE awards in all full classes.
Don't miss the biggest New York mounted shooting event of the year!

Great time at the CMSA NE Regional Championship!
I have to tip my hat to Roger, the CT Renegades and the Mass Six Shooters The NE Regional Championship weekend in Northeast, MA was phenomenal.
Over 40 riders for the "warm up" match on Friday night and over 50 riders for the big Saturday/Sunday match. Things moved like clockwork. THe balloon runners did a great job, as did all the folks that put the match together.
Riders came in from all over. Marty even joined us from Tennessee! Other riders came in from Virginia, Delaware and Pennsylvania. All the New England states were well represented during the weekend.
It was a great event to be a part of. The indoor arena was great and kept us out of the sun. It is amazing to see some of those riders fly through those courses. There were some of the fastest times I have ever seen.
Congratulations to all the winners!

Riders brave the heat for
Eastward Ho!
Long Island turned up the heat for our first full Island Long Riders match at Hidden Pond Stables in Manorville. We managed ten riders for the match and, amazingly, no one (human or equine) melted. Imagine that!
Top honors went to Bruce riding Miss Kitty. Our only riders for the day to break 100 seconds on total time. Complete standings are:
1. Bruce T
2. Mark R
3. Joe M
4. Mary M
5. Stephanie M
6. Jimmy P
7. Lisa B
8. Jim O
9. Marvin G
10. Al M
Everyone made it to the top 10! We had a full Men's 1 class, which means Jimmy gets his 2nd move-up win. Look out everyone - this kid is going to move up quick.
Detailed results can be downloaded from the forms and event pages.
Big thanks to:
- Sheriff AB Dupree for all his help.
- Gene for helping out and bringing grandchildren to run balloons.
- Our other balloon runners (Blake & Company, Gregory).
- Danielle, Barbara, Emily and Bill for showing up to help out even though they didn't ride today.
It is truly a team effort to pull these events off. Things ran so smooth today that we finished early enough for our Connecticut friends to join us for an impromptu "after-match party." It don't get no better than that. :)

Gunfight at the Gulch a big success
Fifteen riders came out to brave the sun and heat. When the trail dust settled, Leslie Kaminoff barely edged out his son, Jai to take the title of "Match Champion." Father and son were flying through the courses that day, making for an exciting match. After Leslie and Jai were Mark RIzzo and Bruce Tolhurst in the #3 and #4 positions. Less than six seconds separated the first four places - that means the match was decided by less that one miss!

Island Long Riders featured at the NE Equine Expo at Belmont Racetrack
Another first for Cowboy Mounted Shooting as the Island Long Riders exploded onto the scene at Belmont Racetrack this past weekend.
The NE Equine Expo started with a BANG! as the Island Long Riders helped open the event with a parade down Hempstead Turnpike. After the parade, we headed back to the track where Pete, Frank, Tom and Mary ran some patterns and showed the crowd what "hard ridin' and straight shootin'" is all about! Even I couldn't resist taking a "break" from recuperation and trying a quick run at the balloons.
It was fun being a part of this event at historic Belmont Racetrack. Thank to the organizers of the NE Equine Expo for having the Island Long Riders there.

Great time for all at Battle for the Ranch.
31 riders turned out for Battle for the Ranch Day 1 at Roundtuit Ranch on Saturday. Dick Moody took the overall champion title with a time of 79.047. Connecticut club president Roger Dinsmore was hot on his heels placing second with at time of 79.965. They were followed by Allison Forsyth, Bruce Tolhurst, Joan Davis and a new New York rider, Bill Riel. Full results can be downloaded on the forms page.
Weather was a bit warm, but cooperative.
So many people to thank:
Jen Seymour and the folks at Roundtuit Ranch for use of the great facility.
Joan and JoAnn for keeping things moving in the score booth.
Storyteller Carolyn Stearns for the fabulous announcing.
Carolyn Rogers and the Granby Mustangs for running the balloons in the heat all day.
Roger and the CT Renegades for sharing the equipment and all the help setting up.
Bruce and Joan for ringmaster the event.
Stephanie for running the computer, managing the money and helping out so much.
A big thanks to Elizabeth and Steve at Bluebird Meadow Farm for donating some nice prizes for the riders. Check out their website for tack, equipment and gifts.
These events are real team efforts - thanks to everyone for helping it run so smoothly!
Congratulations to all the riders. I appreciate the support. Pete was looking great - I hope the fun time was worth the drive up there. Also glad to see all the support for the "upstate" New York riders. You are all looking great out there.
Weather cancelled our local Sunday event, so we were able to stay and shoot "Day 2" on Sunday. As always, CT did a great job and fun was had by all. Mark R was especially helpful in showing me the "right" way to fall off a horse. Really Mark, I will take your word for it - demonstrations are NOT necessary.

Check out their web page for more information on Cowboy Action Shooting!
Cowboy Mounted Shooting is the fastest growing equestrian sport in the nation. Mounted contestants compete in this fast action timed event using two .45 caliber single action revolvers each loaded with five rounds of specially prepared blank ammunition. These are just like the stage props used in Hollywood movies.
There are a variety of levels of competition for everyone, ranging from novice levels to the seasoned professional.
Mounted Shooting is like barrel racing with balloons in between the barrels. The rider shoots black powder blank cartridges from .45 caliber pistols, at balloons, and is scored on accuracy and time.
Come ride with us or just come out to watch and join in the spirit of the old west. There is something for everyone! Contact us today to find out how you can be a part of this exciting sport.
